Necessity of an Official Language for All

Korea has the Korean. France has the French. India has the Indian. Generally each country has one language, its own national language. Speaking only one language which is his or her national language is regarded as common and natural way. However more and more necessity for one official language that all world citizens could use is growing high. There should be one world language that everyone speaks because it is good for unity, effective communication, and understanding different cultures.

Using a world language makes world people more united. Language is a symbol of same range of emotion, history, and all kinds of culture that we share. Therefore language strengthens the unity. For example Chinese language has millions of branches of languages according to locality and ethnics, but they think themselves that they are tightly tied with the big roof of “Chinese” language. The roof of language gives people communality and sense of belonging. While some might say that using a world language prevents multiplicity, world language does not mean using only one language, so it can rather enhance diversity.

Another reason that we should have a world official language is that it makes our communication richer. If we use one common language, the range of expression that we can express freely will be broadened. For instance according to Korean Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, there are so distorted and misunderstood Korean menus because of language group: bear tang, six times, and dynamic stew are them. Each language has its own meaning for one word and own pronunciation so it is difficult to compatamize when translating one country’s word to another country’s word. Gomtang is Korean traditional soup which makes a beef leg bone broth, but its pronunciation sometimes mislead other countries’ people to understand it as bear tang, which is a soup of bear meet.

             Last but not least diverse culture can be fully understood when we have one official language. If we have official language of existing language such as English or Chinese, every people become to have ability to speak two languages. It means they can understand and live in two cultural ranges. For example, the Canadian use French as well as English in general. They are familiar with French culture as well as English culture. It is a huge advantage to decode various cultural areas and share two cultural implies. It builds our lives richer and our insight deeper.

             As a conclusion there should be one official language that people in every corner in the world share because it is efficient for making them join in one, making communication unrestricted, and share different cultures. Of course learning one more language is painful and distressed. However the fruit after struggle may be sweet if we could become to share our ideas, emotions, and cultures with all people in the world.

Cloning: the highest technology in human science

Cloning

In 1996, when Dolly, the first cloned sheep was successfully cloned, from an adult cell by Scottish scientists at the Roslin Institute, the possibility of human cloning spurred universal concern and debates about its pros and cons. It may hold a great deal of promise in future scientific researches and medical treatments, but unfortunately, the first conception many people have when they hear “human cloning” is of a malformed human being in science fiction films. However, cloning technologies have been longer than Dolly and is considerably different from people’s notion.

Cloning involves the creation of genetic copies of cells of organisms. People vaguely have an idea that cloning is some kind of an experiment conducted by humans. However it does not always happen that way. Identical twins happen when a zygote, which is formed after fertilization of an egg cell by a sperm cell, divides into a two-celled embryo, which naturally separate embryos within the mother. In a laboratory, scientists use a method of transferring genetic material called Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer as a as a way of cloning. Mammals such as mice, pig, cows, and sheep have been cloned using this technique so far.

According to Wikipedia, human cloning is the creation of a genetically identical copy of a human. The term is generally used to refer to artificial human cloning, which is the reproduction of human cells and tissues. Stem cells for cloning would then be chemically treated to be diverse cells and many scientists desire that these stem cells can be used as substitute cells for the cells damaged by degenerative diseases, for example, cancer, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. There are however, a variety of practical and social issues surrounding all types of cloning. With a success rate of only about 3%, cloning has aroused some scientists to question whether it is worth the effort. There are ethical concerns about the cloning, especially human cloning.

In the United States, several attempts have been made to start a public review of the significance of human cloning and to enact appropriate policies. For example, the National Bioethics Advisory Commission released a report on the subject of cloning-to-produce-children in 1997. The Commission concluded that cloning-to-produce-children was unethical on safety grounds. Moreover more permanent moral concerns surrounding the practice should be the subject of continuing deliberation in order to further our understanding of the ethical and social hidden meaning of this technology and to enable society to produce appropriate policies about this cloning.

The possibility of human cloning has raised controversies. Human cloning might violate human dignity because it disobeys natural rules about birth and death, and furthermore, it will lead human lives to dehumanized society. For example, in a film <Never Let Me Go> about human clone, humans only want clones to donate their organs and the completed clones become meaningless. Clones are disposed after donation, but they are surprisingly absolutely conformable to human power which made and control them. One of clones is aware of the society which wants unity and communality, but just cries and laments the reality that controls her life, without any will of planning to resist of struggle against the controlling human power that destines her life.

It is obvious that cloning, specifically human cloning has made a significant accomplishment in human science history. However it has a double-side of coin: the good point of development of technology and the bad point of ethical problems. In a conclusion, as we all know the good and evil faces of cloning, we should be careful to make a process or perform this scientific technology because it treat us, our lives, and our future.

Blanche in <A Streetcar Named Desire> and Ophelia in <Hamlet>

One of the greatest American Plays <A Streetcar Named Desire> written by Tennesse Williams has born the attractive woman character, Blanche Dubois. Ophelia in <Hamlet>,  written by William Shakespeare is second to none in great woman characters in English play history. Two women characters have one common thing that they possess self-images distorted by others as well as two different features I found in various criteria.

Blanche and Ophelia are similar in that both have images misunderstood by others, especially men. In peculiar, Blanche is disgraced by Mitch, her boyfriend, because he revealed all her unclean past in Laurel, hometown of Blanche that she lived in for a long time. Mitch is a phony gentleman who has a bias toward women: one is that woman is a maternal human being like Diana, the goddess in Greek-Roman myth who represents purity, and another is that woman is a lustful being which is like Venus, the goddess in Greek-Roman myth who symbolizes human instinct for beauty and desire. In the story, Blanche is not treated as a precious and admirable woman by Mitch because Mitch looked only a slice of her life. Likewise, Ophelia, a lover of Hamlet, is easily taken advantage of her father’s dark designs to find out Hamlet’s real thoughts. She is treated badly, ignored, and even fell into contempt by Hamlet to go to nunnery. Through the lines that Hamlet curses and makes fool of Ophelia, we can read out that Hamlet’s misogynistic attitude. Ophelia is completely dissembled by Hamlet: she is not regarded as a precious lover and meaningful existence.

However the two women characters deal with this wrong cognition of men toward themselves in different ways. In Williams’ artwork, Blanche experiences this sort of emotional violence and copes with independent attitude. She shouts “Fire! Fire!”, to expel Mitch, attempting sexual harassment, and protect herself from external threats. In this manner, Miss Dubois is regarded as an active and dependent woman. On the other hand, Ophelia is described as beautiful but weak, indecisive and even dependent on man. As soon as she becomes not regarded as a precious lover, she loses the meaning and is destroyed by man’s view, being degraded as trivial by Hamlet. She becomes totally mad and gives up her own life. In this light, how to deal with man’s gaze by Ophelia drew by William Shakespeare is different from that of Blanche portraited by Tennesse Williams.

             Second, the two women characters have their own color symbolizing each personality, especially shown with the colors of clothing. Blanche has her own symbolic color, white. As we can recognize easily through her name meaning ‘white’ in French, the color white symbolizes herself. Adding to her name, when she appears in Scene One, “she is daintly dressed in a white suit with a fluffly bodies, necklace and earrings of pearl, white gloves and a hat”. She always wears only while color clothes and this stands for purity, cleanness, and innocence. On the other hand, Ophelia wears quite colorful dresses. In particular, she puts on red, rose, wine-colored dresses, quite contrast with her inner personality. In my opinion as a high-class woman in such a Renaissance period, Ophelia’s clothes should be elegant and impressive colored like red so she has to appear to be strong enough to others. As a result, the author’s use of this color brings a great effect on readers to understand the main character efficiently.

In conclusion, even though Blanche and Ophelia are totally different characters in different literary works, they have not only a similarity in that both are reflected badly by other people, but also differences in that they solve the problem with their own way and they have individual symbolic colors.

Make Our Forest Live!

Forests are disappearing. We are destroying the world’s precious ancient forests at an unprecedented rate. A quarter of the forest lost in the last 10,000 years has been destroyed in the last 30 years. Forest loss has a direct link to loss of biodiversity and this will increase to 10,000 times faster by 2050. In my opinion the main reason of deforestation lies in overproduction and overuse of papers. Not using paper cups and planting trees as an alternative are crucial ways to establish sustainable future.

In individual level, using personal cups at café helps us to make the sustainable future. In Starbucks in US, beverages account for approximately 4 billion cups globally each year. As one of the great foodservice businesses, Starbucks is working to lead the entire industry toward greater access to recycling for cups and other packaging. However it does not work well as expected. Therefore as more and more paper cups are consumed, more and more trees are cut out and at last forests worldwide will be damaged and extinct. This is why individuals start to bring our own personal cups to protect the trees and whole forest, and beyond, the nature. Using more personal cups can prevent logging for paper cups which are consumed at cafes.

In national level, planting trees by Government-initiative leads us to sustainable future. In Korea there is an arbor day as a public holiday called ‘Sikmok-il’, on April 5 until 2005. This Korean Arbor Day is the day in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees. If public power and Governments in more and more countries encourage people to plant trees with establishing national holiday, newborn forest will pop up before long. Besides, near future, new amount of growing trees will surpass the amounts of already logged trees.

Healthy Earth requires us to taking your own cups to cafes and participating in planting seedling at national arbor holidays. Ending deforestation is our best chance to preserve biodiversity and our nature. While there are no silver bullet solutions, these two approaches can impact on our sustainable future. Here is some bonus point: You can be the eco-fashionistar with your fashionable individual cup with gorgeous pattern and colors! Also you can spend a good time with your family planting trees at tree-holiday in the middle of peaceful nature!

How place plays an important role

 

When do you watch movies, which one do you prefer to focus on-character or place? Generally people including myself tend to concentrate on main characters’ personalities and behaviors, as well as their excellent appearances. However with several films, characters who in plot could not play roles in any other place: room in the Vermeer’s house in Girl with a Pear Earring is an example of such a movie. Vermeer’s atelier is a crucial place ingredient in the movie Girl with a Pearl Earring because in the very studio Griet is drawn to the new world and is ruined at the same time.

The master Vermeer’s atelier first attracts Griet, a maid of Vermeer’s house, to the totally different and new world. When first Griet enters the room to clean up, Vermeer tries to teach her how to use camera obscura, the origin of now what is called ‘camera’, and he knows it by intuition that Griet is different from any other girl in lower class. This event stands as a starting point that Griet becomes familiar with arts of upper class and Vermeer personally. She learns about paints, colors, and general knowledge for drawing, the holy area of Vermeer in the whole families. This is so extraordinary experience for Griet to join the secret with Vermeer, making her feel special and unique.

However at the same time Vermeer’s atelier finally destroys her fantasy to the upper class and gives her back to the lower class. In the drawing room, Vermeer begins to draw Griet and gets her one ear pierced for the perfect drawing, girl with a pearl earring. Of course this is a taboo to piercing ear secretly, and making the matters worse, the required earring was hostess Catharina’s. Taking the risk, Griet secretly get her ear pierced and becomes the model with a perfect figure for Vermeer’s painting. Unfortunately all the secrets are unveiled, and Griet are not only dismissed but also suffered from the cold eyes of villagers. Finally without profound love, she marries Pieter, a son of butcher, and this shows that she is ruined totally and return back to poor reality.

Girl with a Pearl Earring shows that how an important place-Vermeer’s atelier here- becomes a great symbol to explain everything in the movie. The atelier makes Griet feel fantastic to enter the fresh world as a model of Vermeer, but simultaneously makes her feel lost everything to come down from heaven to reality. Haven’t you ever wanted to experience a magic room to lead you to a heavenly position or unlucky event?
